A reading room added to a 1962 library, joined to it by a glazed link 2.4 metres wide. The new room is a single volume with north light on three sides and no windows facing the street.
The shelves are the structure. Nine load-bearing bookcases in laminated fir carry the roof, which means the perimeter is free and the room can be read in one glance from the door.
Each bookcase is 420 mm deep and 3.1 metres tall, which is as high as a person can reach from the second step of a ladder.
The linoleum floor is the same specification as the 1962 building. It was still in production.
